Discover the scents and savours of the Cévennes

One-day excursion on Tuesdays

On this one-day excursion, you’ll delve into traditional life in the Cévennes, and go to the market at Saint-Jean-du-Gard. The village is typically Cévenol. You’ll also visit the medieval village of Sauve, home to numerous artists and artisans.

You’ll start off your day in Saint-Jean-du-Gard and go on a guided tour of the Musée des Vallées Cévenoles. It's a great way to see how life used to be lived in the Cévennes. Then, you can stroll around the market and soak up the atmosphere in this lovely village nestled at the foot of the Cévennes mountains. You’ll get a real taste of the south of France, with all the delicious local produce on sale, and arts and crafts from around the region.

You’ll be free to decide where to have lunch.

In the afternoon, we’ll take you to Sauve. With its ancient ramparts and gateways and medieval towers, Sauve is an architectural delight. There’s a lively atmosphere as Sauve is a real centre for arts and crafts. You’ll be meeting some of the artists and artisans who have made the village their home.

You could walk over to the "Mer de Rochers", an array of rocks that have been sculpted over time by the wind and rain. Otherwise, we suggest that you visit the pitchfork museum. Sauve is known as France’s pitchfork capital. The pitchforks are fashioned from the wood of the hackberry tree.

Late afternoon, you’ll visit wine makers at their domaine. Wine tasting will be on the agenda, of course, and you’ll be able to try some other regional specialities.

Arts, crafts and local specialities

 One-day excursion on Fridays

On this one-day excursion, you'll get a true taste of life in the Gard. You'll meet local artisans, savour regional specialities, and see some superb scenery.

In the morning, you'll go to Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie, which has been famed as a centre for pottery for centuries. The village is home to numerous potters and other artisans, and hosts the European Festival of Ceramic Arts. You’ll be able to meet the local ceramists and stroll around the Friday market, an ideal place to savour Mediterranean scents and savours.

We’ll then take you to meet Emmanuelle, who produces organic essential oils. You’ll get to see the plants and flowers she grows (roses, lavender, thyme, sage, and mint), and see how they are distilled to make the oils.

The next stop will be the fortified medieval village of Lussan. One of the most beautiful villages in the Gard, Lussan is perched high up on a plateau overlooking the garrigue.

You’ll be free to decide where to have lunch in Lussan. Picnicking is an option, or you could eat in one of the village restaurants or on a cafe terrace.

After lunch, we’ll stop off for a look at the "Concluses", spectacular gorges carved out of the limestone by the Aiguillon and the Merdéris, two tributaries of the river Cèze.

You’ll then be the guests of goat’s cheese producer, Michelle. You’ll be able to taste her pélardons, a real local speciality.

Late afternoon, you’re invited to visit a local wine maker’s domaine. Wine tasting will be on the agenda, of course.
